ENOCH

A. "AND ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD; AND HE WAS NOT FOR GOD TOOK HIM" - GENESIS 5:21-24
  1. Our text offers to us a brief, divinely inspired, life sketch of Enoch - the seventh from Adam:
    1. "He walked with God"
    2. That was the greatest attainment possible by human beings
  2. A few other men are spoken of as having walked with God:
    1. Noah walked with God - Gen. 6:9
    2. Abraham walked with God - Gen. 17:1; and so did Jacob - Gen. 48:15
    3. That can be said of Job - Job 1:1-3; of Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth Luke 1:5-6
B. LET US CONSIDER ENOCH'S WALK WITH GOD; ITS IMPLICATION AND REWARD
  1. Enoch was not:
    1. A hermit - separate from other men; he lived in the purest environment possible, but mingled freely with the people
    2. He was not without the temptations and trials which are common to all men; he was misunderstood and ridiculed by his contemporaries
  2. His life was a walk with God:
    1. Day by day he sought to live in harmony with the light God had given him by Adam; by angels and in visions
    2. For to walk with God implies harmony with God - "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" - Amos 3:3
    3. To walk with God means walking in the Spirit - Gal. 5:16
  3. Some further implications of walking with God:
    1. A walk with God implies personal fellowship with Him - I John 1:3; 2 Cor. 13:14
    2. But fellowship indicates personal communion with the Lord. It is said that Enoch had daily communion with Christ, the Son of God - that indicates that Enoch was a man of prayer - I Thess 5:17-20
    3. Such a life is the noblest and highest attainment possible by angels and men
C. REWARD OF WALKING WITH GOD
  1. Of Enoch it is written:
    1. That he had this testimony, "That he pleased God" - Heb. 11:5
    2. Enoch was a prototype of whom the Father said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" - Matt. 17:5; 3:17
    3. He was translated to Heaven without seeing or tasting death - Heb. 11:5; Gen. 5:24
    4. Even though he had been ridiculed and mistreated by some; yet when he had been taken from the earth, he was missed by his contemporaries - "He was not found"
  2. Enoch was a forerunner of the 144,000 who, too, will be translated from among men without tasting death:
    1. They are known as they which keep the commandments of God, have the patience of the saints, and the faith of Jesus - Rev. 14:12
    2. Of them it is written, "In their mouth was found no guile; for they are without fault before the throne of God: - Rev. 14:5
  3. Enoch had great privileges while he walked with God:
    1. He was permitted to preview the closing events of earth's history - Jude 14-16
    2. He was the first man that entered the New Jerusalem - the camp of the saints; he walked in the Paradise of God
    3. He now wears the crown of righteousness which awaits the saints in general - I Tim. 4:8-9
    4. He was not perfect in himself; but was clothed with Christ's righteousness - I Cor. 1: 30-33; Is. 61:10
    5. He exemplified the teaching God gave Adam and Eve
    6. He was permitted to preview the death and resurrection of Christ
  4. Best of all:
    1. His life is the divine proof that men may be overcomers
    2. That they can walk with God
