MOTHER EVE
A. "AND ADAM CALLED HIS WIFE'S NAME EVE; BECAUSE SHE WAS THE MOTHER
OF ALL LIVING" - GENESIS 3:20
- This brief statement about mother Eve is most revealing:
- It pin points the origin of the human race in a positive way - "Eve, the mother of all living" - Act 17:26; I Cor. 15:45-46
- It gives the lie to the popular theory that there were other human beings on earth besides Adam and Eve
- It is noteworthy:
- That Adam gave names, not only to all beasts brought to him
- But, also, to the woman that was taken out of his ribs - Gen. 2:21-22
B. THE STORY OF MOTHER EVE
- Is very brief, but most enlightening:
- She was bone of Adam's bone, and flesh of his flesh - Gen. 2:21-22
- Thus symbolizing the absolute oneness of husband and wife - Matt. 19:4-5
- The creation of Eve shows the Creator's original design of marriage:
- It was intended for mutual support; Eve was created to be "a help meet" Gen. 2:18
- God took one of the ribs of Adam to create Eve - Gen. 2:21
- That again symbolized the place of Eve in the life of Adam; she was not to be the head of Adam, but rather a part of the body being shielded or protected
- God did not take Eve from the sole of Adam's foot - that indicates her place of honor in Adam's life; not to be abused or disrespected but honored
- The story of Eve has a number of other implications:
- She, too was made in the image of God; thus reflecting the likeness of her Creator - Gen. 1:27
- Eve was in no way inferior to Adam - either physically or mentally or morally; she was Adam's equal
- These facts indicate her moral responsibility toward God and man - Gen. 3:6-16
C. IMPORTANT LESSONS FOR GOD'S PEOPLE
- That God, our Creator and Redeemer is:
- The author of marriage - Gen. 2:18-21; Matt. 19:45
- this makes marriage sacred and honorable - Heb. 13:4; Lev. 21:13-15
- For marriage to be successful, God must bring it about; He must unite the man and woman to be husband and wife
- That a holy seed is one of the chief ends of holy matrimony:
- that is what the prophet of the Lord says, "That he might seek a godly see" Matt. 2:15
- To obtain this holy end, God placed Eve, our mother, into a most responsible position, to bring up her posterity in the love and obedience of God; Examples: Jochebed and Moses Ex. 2:3-5; Heb. 11:24-27; the mother and the grandmother of Timothy - Eunice and Lois - 2 Tim. 1:5; the mother of Samson - Judges 14:15:16
- Where mother Eve failed:
- She strayed away from her husband
- She allowed her curiosity to blind her to her duty to the Creator; she was deceived - Gen. 3:1-6; 2 Cor. 11:3
- She sought to attain a position not ordained by the Creator - Gen. 3:6
- She failed to counsel with her husband before she plunged into sin - "In the multitude of counsel is wisdom"
- The consequences of mother Eve's sin:
- Become subordinate to her husband - that meant that she no longer was equal to him - "He shall rule over thee" - Gen. 3:16; I Cor. 11:3; I Tim. 2:11-12
- Her transgression brought sorrow to her and her loved one - Gen. 3:16; Job 14:1
- But God provided a way for Eve to be saved:
- the seed of the woman, which is Christ, opened the door of hope for humanity - Gen. 3:15; Gal. 3:15; 4:1-4; writes Paul, "I will that younger women marry, bear children, guide the house" - I Tim. 5:14
- the plan of redemption brings the woman back into the equality with man, as God had designed to begin with - Gal. 3:28
