PRISCILLA

A. "GREET PRISCILLA AND AQUILA MY HELPERS IN CHRIST JESUS" - ROM. 16:3; I COR. 16:19; 2 TIM. 4:19; ACTS 18:2, 18, 26
  1. The names Priscilla and Aquila were very much in the experience of Paul:
    1. He writes of them as my helpers in Christ Jesus"
    2. In his Epistle to the Corinthians, he writes, "Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord" - I Cor. 16:19
  2. Aquila and his wife Priscilla were, indeed, very active in the work of the Lord:
    1. Their ministry in the gospel was teamwork from start to finish
    2. This is a credit to their marriage and to the cause of God
B. A PRAYERFUL STUDY OF THE BIBLE STORY OF PRISCILLA AND HER HUSBAND AQUILA IS MOST REVEALING
  1. They were one in marital bliss:
    1. One is intrigued by their close association in their every move in life - start where we may, we find Aquila and Priscilla together - that is the way it should be
    2. Said the Son of God, "and they twain shall be one flesh" - Matt. 19:5
  2. They were one in the Lord:
    1. Thus it becomes clear that the oneness of husband and wife and not limited to the domestic life, but rather and foremost includes oneness in the Lord
    2. When this is not the experience of a married couple, difficulties are bound to interfere
    3. That is why Paul warns the believer, "Be ye not unequally yoked together" - 2 Cor. 6:14-18
  3. They were one in secular occupation:
    1. Luke informs us that "by their occupation they were tentmakers" - Acts 18:3
    2. They and Paul must have been taught the craft of tent making in their youth; and surely worked well for them when they were doing self-supporting work for the Lord - Acts 20:34; I Thes. 2:9; 2 Thes. 3:8
  4. They were one in the profound knowledge of the Scriptures:
    1. One of the most impressive aspects of the spiritual influence of Aquila and Priscilla was their sound knowledge of the truth as it is in Christ Jesus
    2. They clarified that orator Appolos on some points of the truth which enabled him to do more efficient work - Acts 18:25-26
C. A SPECIAL LESSON FOR PRESENT DAY GOSPEL WORKERS
  1. Team work of husband and wife:
    1. Is the foundation of true and lasting happiness between husband and wife
    2. This, I am confident to believe, was true in the marriage relation between Aquila and Priscilla
    3. They planned together, they prayed together, and they labored together in the cause of God
    4. That is truly a wonderful concept of marriage as God conceived it in the beginning
  2. United in the same faith is a must:
    1. If the marriage is to endure
    2. If the children are to be brought up in truth
    3. If the world shall be influenced to change its attitude toward marriage
  3. What a wonderful life Aquila must have had together with Priscilla:
    1. In the home
    2. In their occupation to make a living
    3. And in the service of the church of God
  4. As we take farewell of Aquila and Priscilla we remind ourselves that in the history of Christianity the truly great characters have always been simple and humble men and women:
    1. Their faith in God enriched them with virtues that God designs to be a perpetual testimony to the power of God unto salvation
    2. He designs for them to display these virtues to the world - I Peter 2:9-11
    3. Said Jesus to the disciples, "Ye are the light of the world . . .Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven" - Matt. 5:14-16 - Priscilla and Aquila did that
