A NEW CREATURE
A. THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF
- The Old Man: Rom. 6:6; Col. 3:9; Eph. 4:22
- The New Man: Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10
B. NATURE OF THE OLD MAN
- Nothing about him is sound:
- "From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it;
- But wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores" - Isa. 1:16
- Note these Bible facts about the old man:
- The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked - Jer. 17:9
- The mind has been blinded by Satan - 2 Cor. 4:4
- The conscience has been seared, as with a hot iron - 1 Tim. 4:2
- The will has been enslaved to a point where it leaves the sinner helpless - Rom. 7:15-26
- The tongue is full of poison - Rom. 3:13
- The mouth is full of cursing - Rom. 3:14; Jas. 3:1-11
- The fruit of the old man makes him wholly unfit for the kingdom of
God:
- It is the lust of the flesh which is set against the work of the Holy Spirit.
- Think of the catalogue of sins attributed to the life of the old man - adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murder, drunkenness, revellings - Gal. 5:19-21
- This condition of the old man makes it impossible for him to enter
into the kingdom of God:
- Rom. 6:5-7; Matt. 16:22, 23
- Rev. 21:17; 22:14, 15
- That is why he must be crucified, put out of the way, to give place to the new man, created in righteousness:
C. THE NEW MAN
- Nature of the new man:
- He is formed, as Adam was (Gen. 1:26, 27), in the image of God.
- That makes him a new creature - 2 Cor. 5:17
- He is created in righteousness and true holiness - Eph. 4:24
- He is renewed in the knowledge after the image of Him that created him - Col. 3:10
- This experience gives him a new standing before God and men:
- Old things have passed away. What a wonderful blessing to all who experience such a new life!
- How wonderful it is to be able to turn our back upon our
sinful past!
EXAMPLES -
- The thief on the cross - Luke 23:42-44
- The woman of Samaria - John 4:1-29
- David - Acts 13:22
- What about all our sins?
- "I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud thy sins" - Isa. 44:22
- "Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea" - Mi. 7:18, 19
- Christ, "who his own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree" - 1 Pet. 2:24
- This experience makes us fellow heirs with Christ of all God's promises; and it prepares us for translation when Christ comes the second time:
- How does this glorious experience affect you, dear reader?
