"COME UNTO ME"
A. "COME UNTO ME, ALL YE THAT LABOR AND ARE HEAVY LADEN AND I WILL
GIVE YOU REST"
- The word "come" is one of the sweetest words in the Bible:
- The first "come" in the Bible is one of salvation - Gen. 7:1
- Egypt's invitation to Jacob and his family to come to be the guests of Joseph and Pharaoh "come" - Gen. 45:19
- "Come and follow me" - Matt. 19:21
- The word "come as used in our text is of special importance to us:
- It is an invitation to the heavy laden to find rest
- To the people who are worried about their lives to find reassurance of security B. LET US NOTE, PRAYERFULLY, A THREEFOLD IMPLICATION OF OUR OPENING TEXT
- Purpose of our coming:
- Rest - "Come, and I will give you rest" - Matt. 11:28
- Knowledge - "learn of me" - "come and see" - Matt. 11:29; John 12:15; 1:39
- Satisfaction - "Come unto me and drink" John 7:37. "And the Spirit and the Bride say "Come". And let Him that heareth say, Come, and let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will let him take of the water of life freely" - Rev. 22:17
- Discipleship - "Come and follow me" - Mark 10:21 "If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed" - John 8:31. "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit so shall ye be my disciples" - John 15:8
- Victory - "Come near, put your feet upon the neck of these kings" - Josh. 10:24
- Fellowship - "Come and dine" - John 21:12 "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me." - Rev. 3:20
- Refreshment - "Come and rest awhile" - Mark 6:31
- Inheritance - "Come...and inherit" - Matt. 25:34. What a wonderful invitation; how can anyone refuse it? C. HOW MUST WE COME?
- We must come just as we are; for the very good reason that we are too far gone to make ourselves presentable to God any different that we really are: Examples: The prodigal came just the way he was and his father received him Luke 15:11-32. The Pharisee sought to embellish his person and for that reason his coming was useless - Luke 18:10-14
- We must come to God in the name of Jesus Christ to be received of God - "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." John 14:6
- When are we to come:
- "Now is the Accepted time, now is the day of salvation" - 2 Cor. 6:2
- "Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, today if ye hear His voice, harden not your hearts" - Heb. 3:7-8
- "For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and sheep of His hand; Today if ye hear His voice" - Ps. 95:7
- "Come down; for today I must abide at thy house" - Luke 19:5
- Three life-saving comes:
- Come to Jesus Christ
- Come just as you are
- Come now
- "All that the Father giveth shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" - John 6:37 How wonderful it is to have God give us such wonderful opportunities to come to Him just as we are; and that He will not turn us away when we do come to Him.
