SECURITY

A. "BE CONTENT WITH WHAT YOU HAVE FOR HE HAS SAID, NEVER WILL I FAIL YOU, NEVER WILL I FORSAKE YOU. SO THAT WE CAN SAY CONFIDENTLY, THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT CAN MEN DO TO ME?" - HEB. 13:5-6 (Moffatt)
  1. You will notice that our opening text is based upon several passages found in Psalms and in Joshua:
    1. "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear; what can men do unto me" - Ps. 118:6
    2. "I will be with thee; I will not fail thee" - Joshua 1:5
  2. The writer to the Hebrew believers must have been aware of some of the Christians of Hebrew descent:
    1. Who were uneasy about their security in the Christian faith
    2. They feared that their acceptance of Christianity would exclude them from the inheritance of their fathers
B. SECURITY IS THE TITLE OF OUR MESSAGE FOR THIS MORNING
  1. Meaning of the word SECURITY:
    1. The word "security" is at times, associated with freedom from fear
    2. It signifies freedom from danger
    3. Freedom from uncertainty and doubt is also associated with security
  2. Men's concept of security differ widely:
    1. Some envision material accumulation as security for themselves - Examples: The rich farmer felt very secure in that he had accumulated considerable wealth - Luke 12:16-20; Nabal thought that he was completely self-sufficient because he was wealthy - I Sam. 25:25-38
    2. But the Bible warns us not to attach ourselves to material riches - why? because they are uncertain - I Tim. 6:17; Ps. 62:10
    3. The Son of God states the reason for not seeking security in the material things in life - "For a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth" - Luke 12:15
    4. We have known of men who were unable to even assess their wealth, but they committed suicide
C. GOD THE ONLY SOURCE OF TRUE SECURITY
  1. The security of God's hold:
    1. "Never will I fail thee" - Gen. 28:15
    2. "Be strong and of good courage, fear not nor be afraid of them; for the Lord thy God he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee nor forsake thee" - Deut. 31:5-6
    3. Our text makes it clear that our security depends on God's hold of us and not on our hold on Him
  2. Bible based and child-like faith in God is our only means to reassuring security in this life and that of the world to come:
    1. Faith in God's promises, and there are many in the Bible, anchor us safely to the Rock of Ages
    2. "Faith is the victory that overcometh the world" - I John 5:4
  3. We must ever keep in mind that God's promises to His children are:
    1. The foundation of His Throne - Num 23:19; Mal. 3:6; Heb. 6:16-20
    2. These promises have been secured to us in the gift of His only begotten Son Jesus Christ our Lord - 2 Cor. 1:20
  4. Dear friends; do you want real and lasting security against sin?
    1. You have it in Jesus Christ our Lord - Matt. 1:21; John 8:31-36
    2. Do you wish to have security against the day of judgment to come; you have it in Jesus Christ our Lord - Rom. 8:1-3; 31-38
    3. Do you want to have security against an accusing conscience, you have it in Jesus Christ our Lord - I John 3:20
    4. Do you wish to have security against the enemy of your soul? You have it in Jesus Christ our Lord "If God be for us who can be against us?" - Rom. 8:31
  5. Security - present and future; our opening text offers that to all who desire it; it centers on God, the source of life, health and true happiness. How sad it is to think that so many seek security outside of God
