SECURITY
A. "BE CONTENT WITH WHAT YOU HAVE FOR HE HAS SAID, NEVER WILL I FAIL YOU,
NEVER WILL I FORSAKE YOU. SO THAT WE CAN SAY CONFIDENTLY, THE LORD IS MY
HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT CAN MEN DO TO ME?" - HEB. 13:5-6 (Moffatt)
- You will notice that our opening text is based upon several passages found in Psalms
and in Joshua:
- "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear; what can men do unto me" - Ps. 118:6
- "I will be with thee; I will not fail thee" - Joshua 1:5
- The writer to the Hebrew believers must have been aware of some of the Christians of
Hebrew descent:
- Who were uneasy about their security in the Christian faith
- They feared that their acceptance of Christianity would exclude them from the inheritance of their fathers
B. SECURITY IS THE TITLE OF OUR MESSAGE FOR THIS MORNING
- Meaning of the word SECURITY:
- The word "security" is at times, associated with freedom from fear
- It signifies freedom from danger
- Freedom from uncertainty and doubt is also associated with security
- Men's concept of security differ widely:
- Some envision material accumulation as security for themselves - Examples: The rich farmer felt very secure in that he had accumulated considerable wealth - Luke 12:16-20; Nabal thought that he was completely self-sufficient because he was wealthy - I Sam. 25:25-38
- But the Bible warns us not to attach ourselves to material riches - why? because they are uncertain - I Tim. 6:17; Ps. 62:10
- The Son of God states the reason for not seeking security in the material things in life - "For a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth" - Luke 12:15
- We have known of men who were unable to even assess their wealth, but they committed suicide
C. GOD THE ONLY SOURCE OF TRUE SECURITY
- The security of God's hold:
- "Never will I fail thee" - Gen. 28:15
- "Be strong and of good courage, fear not nor be afraid of them; for the Lord thy God he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee nor forsake thee" - Deut. 31:5-6
- Our text makes it clear that our security depends on God's hold of us and not on our hold on Him
- Bible based and child-like faith in God is our only means to reassuring security in this
life and that of the world to come:
- Faith in God's promises, and there are many in the Bible, anchor us safely to the Rock of Ages
- "Faith is the victory that overcometh the world" - I John 5:4
- We must ever keep in mind that God's promises to His children are:
- The foundation of His Throne - Num 23:19; Mal. 3:6; Heb. 6:16-20
- These promises have been secured to us in the gift of His only begotten Son Jesus Christ our Lord - 2 Cor. 1:20
- Dear friends; do you want real and lasting security against sin?
- You have it in Jesus Christ our Lord - Matt. 1:21; John 8:31-36
- Do you wish to have security against the day of judgment to come; you have it in Jesus Christ our Lord - Rom. 8:1-3; 31-38
- Do you want to have security against an accusing conscience, you have it in Jesus Christ our Lord - I John 3:20
- Do you wish to have security against the enemy of your soul? You have it in Jesus Christ our Lord "If God be for us who can be against us?" - Rom. 8:31
- Security - present and future; our opening text offers that to all who desire it; it centers on God, the source of life, health and true happiness. How sad it is to think that so many seek security outside of God
