THE BEAUTY OF OUR GOD
A. "LET THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD OUR GOD BE UPON US" 1. What a prayer request:
- "Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us."
- That is a request for the divine excellence of God to rest upon us
- Being formed out of clay - Gen. 2:7
- Involves the Divine to become associated with the human - John 1:14
- It points to the Incarnation experience of the Son of God - Gal. 4:4; Heb. 2:9-17 B. THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD OUR GOD - WHAT IS IT? HOW CAN IT BE UPON US?
- The excellency of His character
- "How excellent is Thy loving-kindness." Ps. 36:7
- We think, also of the excellency of His power
- "Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power, thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. That in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee." - Ex. 15:6-8
- Is not to be thought of as a means of self-aggrandizement
- But rather to make known the goodness of the Lord - I Pet. 2:9-11
- That is the way Paul saw it - Gal. 1:15-16
- Pagans have, at best, a very distorted concept of God - John 4:23-24; Eph. 2:11-16; Acts 17:22-27
- Said Jesus, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt. 5:16
- In His love, mercy, patience, and faithfulness - Ex. 34:6-7; 1 John 4:8; 2 Pet. 3:9; 2 Thess. 3:3
- This beauty of our God was reflected in the Son of God - Heb. 1:3; 2 Cor. 4:4
- Never before did the Son of God reflect the Beauty of God than when He hung on Calvary's tree - Luke 23:42-43
- When He said, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." - Luke 23:24
- That was the moment when the Beauty of our God shone brightest - John 3:16; Rom. 8:31-39; 2 Cor. 5:19-21 C. WHAT A PRAYER LESSON FOR US TO PONDER AND TO IMITATE;
- Adam in his state of innocence reflected this beauty - Gen. 1:26-27; 5:1
- Writes the prophet Isaiah, "But we are all like an unclean think, and all our righteousness are a filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities like the wind, have taken us away." - Is. 64:6
- Jesus Christ out Lord
- Writes Paul, "But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption." 1 Cor. 1:30
- Writes Isaiah, "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garment of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom, decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels." - Is. 61:10
- Jeremiah says, "The Lord our Righteousness" Jer. 23:6
- Stephen is a vivid example - Acts 6:8-15
