THE BEAUTY OF OUR GOD

PSALMS 90:1

A. "LET THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD OUR GOD BE UPON US" 1. What a prayer request:
  1. "Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us."
  2. That is a request for the divine excellence of God to rest upon us
  • "Upon Us"
    1. Being formed out of clay - Gen. 2:7
  • Such an experience:
    1. Involves the Divine to become associated with the human - John 1:14
    2. It points to the Incarnation experience of the Son of God - Gal. 4:4; Heb. 2:9-17 B. THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD OUR GOD - WHAT IS IT? HOW CAN IT BE UPON US?
  • The Beauty of our God is:
    1. The excellency of His character
    2. "How excellent is Thy loving-kindness." Ps. 36:7
    3. We think, also of the excellency of His power
    4. "Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power, thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. That in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee." - Ex. 15:6-8
  • The precious gift of the Beauty of the Lord:
    1. Is not to be thought of as a means of self-aggrandizement
    2. But rather to make known the goodness of the Lord - I Pet. 2:9-11
    3. That is the way Paul saw it - Gal. 1:15-16
    4. Pagans have, at best, a very distorted concept of God - John 4:23-24; Eph. 2:11-16; Acts 17:22-27
    5. Said Jesus, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt. 5:16
  • The Beauty of our God reveals itself:
    1. In His love, mercy, patience, and faithfulness - Ex. 34:6-7; 1 John 4:8; 2 Pet. 3:9; 2 Thess. 3:3
    2. This beauty of our God was reflected in the Son of God - Heb. 1:3; 2 Cor. 4:4
    3. Never before did the Son of God reflect the Beauty of God than when He hung on Calvary's tree - Luke 23:42-43
    4. When He said, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." - Luke 23:24
    5. That was the moment when the Beauty of our God shone brightest - John 3:16; Rom. 8:31-39; 2 Cor. 5:19-21 C. WHAT A PRAYER LESSON FOR US TO PONDER AND TO IMITATE;
  • "Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us."
    1. Adam in his state of innocence reflected this beauty - Gen. 1:26-27; 5:1
    2. Writes the prophet Isaiah, "But we are all like an unclean think, and all our righteousness are a filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities like the wind, have taken us away." - Is. 64:6
  • The Divine channel for our transformation is:
    1. Jesus Christ out Lord
    2. Writes Paul, "But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption." 1 Cor. 1:30
    3. Writes Isaiah, "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garment of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom, decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels." - Is. 61:10
    4. Jeremiah says, "The Lord our Righteousness" Jer. 23:6
  • The presence and indwelling of the Holy Spirit brings about the beauty of our God in our lives:
    1. Stephen is a vivid example - Acts 6:8-15
    2. Moses is another example - Ex. 34:29
    3. The baptism of the Holy Ghost brings the fruit of the Spirit into our lives - Gal. 5:22-25
