THE HOUSEHOLDER AND HIS TREASURE
A. "THEN SAID HE UNTO THEM, THEREFORE EVERY SCRIBE WHICH IS
INSTRUCTED UNTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE UNTO A MAN THAT IS
AN HOUSEHOLDER, WHICH BRINGETH FORTH OUT OF HIS TREASURE THINGS
NEW AND OLD"
- In this parable, Jesus compares the gospel of the kingdom:
- To a man that is a householder that has a treasure
- And brings out of that treasure new and old things
- We know from the study of the Bible that Jesus is the householder:
- Paul says so - Heb. 3:6
- The children of faith are His household - Eph. 2:10; Heb. 2:6 B. THE HOUSEHOLDER AND HIS TREASURE
- Christ, the head of the church - Eph. 1:22-23
- Is the second Adam - Rom. 5:14; I Cor. 15:45; Eph. 5:31-32
- He is the head of the New Creation - Heb. 12:2; Col 1:15; Rev. 3:14
- The Christian believers constitute the household of faith:
- "Fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God" - Eph. 2:19; Matt. 24:45
- Water baptism initiates us into the family of God - Ga. 3:26-28; Eph. 3:15
- The treasure in the parable is:
- The Bible - the Holy Scriptures - compare John 5:39 with 2 Tim. 3:15-17
- The Old and the New Testaments or the sixty-six books of the Bible
- The scribe is a man that is learned in the knowledge of the word of God:
- Ezra was a Godfearing scribe - Neh. 8:4
- Our Lord was a scribe in the highest sense of the word
- "He bringeth forth new and old out of His treasure":
- He who is the true light that shineth now revealed new and glorious truths concerning the kingdom of heaven
- But He did not by-pass the Old Testament, rather reinforced it's message C. LET US NOTE, BRIEFLY, FOUR SPECIFIC OBJECT LESSONS GATHERED FROM THE PARABLE OF THE HOUSEHOLDER WHICH BRINGS FORTH NEW AND OLD TRUTHS OUT OF HIS TREASURE
- This shows conclusively:
- That the Son of God did not come to set aside either the law of God or the prophetic forecasts of the coming kingdom - Matt. 5:17-19
- He ever appealed to what was written in the law of Moses and the prophets - John 5:46-47; Luke 24:25-28
- His life, His ministry, His crucifixion and His resurrection were all predicted upon that which was foretold in the Old Testament
- He, who is the express image of His Father; Hebrews 1:3; Col. 1:15
brought new light, revealing new glories of the coming kingdom to the human race:
- He is the true light - John 1:4; 14:6
- He is the wisdom of God - Matt. 13:54; Luke 1:17; 11:49
- The householder of the divine truths of the Bible is most anxious for His
household to know the truths concerning the kingdom of heaven:
- He opened unto them the scriptures - Luke 24:32;45
- The Holy Spirit, Christ's representative is the chief instructor of the household of faith - John 16:12-13
- There is still another lesson of special importance to the workers for God -
the ministers:
- The must be fully versed in the word of God to rightly divide the word of God - 2 Tim. 2:15
- The so called spiritual leaders of the Jews were so engrossed with the traditions of their fathers, that they were ignorant of the scriptures - Matt. 22:29
- Of them the Lord testified that they taught the traditions of men - Matt. 15:1-7; Mark 7:1-9; Thus we learn again the wonderful truths about the gospel of the kingdom of heaven. Let us apply them to our personal life.
