THE KING'S HIGHWAY

ISAIAH 35:8

A. "AND AN HIGHWAY SHALL BE THERE, AND A WAY, AND IT SHALL BE CALLED THE WAY OF HOLINESS; THE UNCLEAN SHALL NOT PASS OVER IT; BUT IT SHALL BE FOR THOSE; THE WAYFARING MEN, THOUGH FOOLS SHALL NOT ERR THEREIN"
  1. The background to this glowing forecast of the King's highway:
    1. Israel was in exile in far-off Babylon, sighing in their hearts out toward the City of Zion
    2. The heart cry was "When and how shall we be able to return home to Zion?"
  2. When they thought of their physical surroundings their hope failed and their hearts became faint:
    1. It was at such a time that this stirring prophecy was given to rouse the hearts of God's people to new hope
    2. One of the most inspiring parts of this forecast is the construction of a highway through the desert B. BUT THIS WRITER BELIEVES THAT THE PROPHECY OF OUR TEXT IS MUCH MORE INCLUSIVE
  3. I love to believe that the prophecy includes the King's Highway to Heaven and to the earth made new:
    1. Note the restriction connected with that highway - "the unclean shall not pass over it" - Is. 52:1; Joel 3:17
    2. Only the righteous have access to this highway - Is. 60:21
    3. They will be comparatively few - Matt. 7:13-14
  4. Nature of that highway:
    1. It is a plain way
    2. Some desert tracks are so difficult to follow that it takes an expert tracker to make them out
    3. Not so with the King's Highway "the wayfaring men, though fools shall not err" - Ps. 25:9
    4. It is lighted all the way - Prov. 4:18. Angels will guide the saints in their travel to the City of our God.
    5. It is a safe way - "No lion shall be there, nor ravenous beast shall go up thereon"
    6. It is a Homeward Way - It promises a safe arrival at the journey's end "The ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads" - Is. 35:10; 51:11 C. WHAT A PREVIEW OF THE KING'S HIGHWAY TO GLORY LAND
  5. The Lord Jesus has a lot to say about the King's Highway:
    1. He speaks of it as "narrow" - Matt. 7:13-14 with a "straight gate" as the entrance
    2. Herodians complimented the Lord by saying "we know that Thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth" - Matt. 22:16
    3. He proclaims boldly, "I am the way" - John 14:6
  6. The Holy Bible is God's road map to guide the children of God to their final destination the New Jerusalem:
    1. How important it is that we consult this road map of the Lord and with much prayer - John 5:39
    2. We should make sure that we are on the King's Highway to the promised land
    3. There is a way which seemeth right, but it misleads the pilgrims - Prov. 16:25
    4. God's way is so different - Is. 55:9
