THE LORD OF LIFE
A. "THERE CAME A CERTAIN RULER AND WORSHIPPED HIM, SAYING, MY
DAUGHTER IS EVEN NOW DEAD, BUT COME AND LAY THY HAND UPON HER,
AND SHE SHALL LIVE. AND JESUS AROSE AND FOLLOWED HIM"
- Our Lord came in direct touch with death on several occasions:
- He was called upon to bring back to life Jairus daughter as indicated in our text.
- The raising from the dead the son of a widow at Nain - Luke 7:11-16
- Then there is the resurrection of Lazarus - John 11:11-44
- It was in connection with the resurrection of Lazarus:
- That Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life - John 11:25
- On another occasion He said, "I am the way, the truth and the life" - John 14:6 B. THE LORD OF LIFE
- Of Him it is written, "In him was life; and the life was the light of men" -
John 1:4
- Said He, speaking of Himself, "For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself" - John 5:26
- Said Paul to the Athenians, "For in Him we live, move, and have our being" - Acts 17:28
- His mission in this valley of death is:
- To give life to all who believe in Him - John 10:10
- The saddest words the Son of man ever spoke are, "Ye will not come unto Me that ye might have life" - John 5:40
- Said the Psalmist, "For with Thee is the fountain of life" - Ps. 36:9
- Wrote John, "He that hath the Son hath life" - I John 5:10-12
- John 3:16 is the key to the life God offers to all who accept Jesus Christ as
their personal Saviour:
- That shows that life through Jesus Christ is the love gift of our heavenly Father
- This love gift is offered to the world in the person of the Son of God C. THE LIFE THAT JESUS OFFERS TO THE WORLD IS LIKE ALL THE GIFTS OF GOD, CONDITIONAL
- Faith is the primary condition to this divine gift:
- This is demonstrated in the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus
- Note the language that pleading father uses to induce Jesus to come with him, "My daughter is even now dead; but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live" - Matt. 9:18-19
- The faith of that father looked beyond the bars of death; beyond the power of death; he saw the Lord of life, and he had full confidence in Him
- Loyalty to the perfect will of God is another basic condition to the gift of
life:
- That was true even before sin entered into this world - Gen. 2:15-16
- Said Jesus to the young ruler, "If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments" - Matt. 19:16-18
- It is most remarkable that when the tree of life is brought to view in the book of Revelation - the same loyalty to the will of God is made the one condition to life - Rev. 22:14
- Overcoming is still another condition to the life that God offers through
his Son:
- "To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life" - Rev. 2:7
- "He that overcometh shall not be hurt by the second death" - Rev. 2:11
- That life which comes through Jesus Christ our Lord will be given:
- At the second coming of Jesus Christ - Mark 10:30
- At the resurrection of the just - John 5:28-29; Luke 14:14
- What a consolation for all who face the human inevitable - once to die:
- To know that Jesus, who tasted death for all men - Heb. 2:9, is the Lord of life
- He has given full assurance to all that He will forever abolish death - 2 Tim. 1:10. We thank God for this divine mercy and we trust in Him, who is the Lord of life.
