"THE UNGODLY ARE NOT SO"
A. "THE UNGODLY ARE NOT SO; BUT ARE LIKE THE CHAFF WHICH THE
WIND DRIVETH AWAY"
- Great truths are seen more clearly by contrast:
- The first Psalm contrasts the man who delights in the law of the Lord with
- The ungodly
- The contrast is:
- In their attitude toward the law of God
- And the result of their attitude B. OUR TEXT CONCERNS ITSELF WITH THE UNGODLY
- Who is he?
- "An ungodly man diggeth up evil; and in his lips there is an a burning fire" - Prov. 16:27
- He walks after his own lust - Jude 18
- He turns the grace of God into lascivious and denies the only Lord God and Jesus Christ our Lord - Jude 4. Examples: Esau was both profane and ungodly; we have no record that he ever had the name of God on his lips - Heb. 12:16; Rom. 9:13. Judas was another profane person - using the sign of a kiss to betray his Lord into the hands of the enemy - Matt. 26:49-50; 27:1-5
- What makes a man ungodly?
- When a man seeks to live without God in the world he is rightly called "ungodly"
- It is even possible for a man to looked upon as morally upright and respectful yet he is ungodly - God is not in his thoughts - Ps. 1-:4
- The ungodly is known by his character of which Paul has a lot to say - 2 Tim. 3:1-5; Gal. 5:19-21
- By nature we all are carnal or ungodly:
- Our nature is carnal - Rom. 7:1-4
- We hate God and his law - Rom. 8:6-7
- We have all gone astray and there is in us the spirit of rebellion that had its origin in the heart of an angel - Is. 14:12-17; Ex. 28:12-18. None of us has any claim to natural goodness - Is. 64:6: Rom. 3:9-23 C. IN CLOSING LET US NOTE HOW THE BIBLE CONTRASTS THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED OR UNGODLY
- The righteous:
- "Say unto the righteous that it shall be well with them" - Is. 3:10
- "It shall be well with him that feareth God" - Eccl. 8:12
- "The Lord said, Verily it shall be well with the remnant" - Jer. 15:11
- "He that hath not given forth upon usury...hath walked in My statutes and hast kept My judgments, to deal truly; he is just he shall surely live, saith the Lord" - Ezek. 18:8-9
- "Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgments; seek ye righteousness; seek meekness; it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger " - Zeph. 2:2-3
- The wicked or ungodly:
- "Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him; for he shall eat the fruit of their doing" - Is. 3:11
- "There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked:" - Is. 48:22
- "But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt" - Is. 57:20
- "For the wages of sin is death" - Rom. 6:23
- "He that soweth upon the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption." - Gal. 6:7-8
- "Then shall He say unto them on the left hand, depart from Me ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels" - Matt. 25:41-43
- What makes the great difference?
- Not anything inherent in human nature because we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God - Rom. 3:23; Gal. 3:22
- Not that God is a respecter of persons; for He regards the person of no man - Acts. 10:34-35; Matt. 22:16
- The difference is Christ! Christ before the throne of God; Christ in the heart! Christ past, present, and throughout all eternity!
